Satellite and Radar

Satellite Imagery

GOES 17 image of the west coast of the U.S., as seen through the RAMMB CIRA Slider. Taken 8/26/21.

West Coast satellite loop

The GOES Image Viewer. Adjust the Loop dropdown for a longer or shorter satellite loop. The dropdown menus above Loop will let you change what part of the Western Hemisphere you want to look at. Hit the Home button in the upper left of the satellite page for a zillion more options.

RAMMB CIRA Slider

This is a good one. LOTS of options on the left, but Product, # of images, and Timestep are super useful. NOTE: The GeoColor here has very high resolution (1/2 km... most others are 1 km), so this detailed look will definitely use a lot of your bandwidth. Longer loops can take a little while to load.

NASA Worldview

Another good one. *The displayed image is NOT current.* The image time stamp is in the bottom left, and most of that is editable! Simply click on the dates to change them; you can make it current here, if you like. This is a visible satellite picture. Images go back to about 2002. Resolution is 1km, not quite as good as the RAMMB CIRA Slider above, but the historical data here is much better.

You can also compare 2 different days side by side. I've set it in this link to look at 2 clear days in early 2019. 'B' is set to Feb 18, the first clear day after the big storm that dropped 1' of snow in Redding on Valentines Day. The snowpack in the Sierra Nevada looks good here, and the Feather River Canyon really stands out. Move the slider bar left/right to see the comparison.

What to do: Select 'A' in the tabs in upper left. Then select your day on the lower left. Then select 'B' in the tabs, and select a different day on the lower left.

Northern California satellite loop

From the College of DuPage. Change the Sector on the left to zoom out. It changes from a visible image to an infrared image when the sun goes down.

Radar Imagery

My kids and the Beale AFB doppler radar (KBBX) in 2011. It's located near the Oroville airport.

National Weather Service (NWS) Radar

This is a nice mosaic of U.S. radars patched together. I've centered the view on Northern California, but you can zoom out to anywhere in the U.S.to view radar data.

Weatherbug

This radar loop includes lightning data.

Blitzortung

Lightning data. No radar, only lightning. Scroll down a bit to see the lightning map.
