Models

The NAM model, run on 8/28/21. This shows Hurricane Ida nearing landfall in Louisiana on 8/29/21.

CANSAC WRF

VERY high resolution model, run only for California and Nevada here by the Desert Research Institute in Reno, NV. This is about as detailed (and accurate) a model you'll find, but only goes out 72 hours (3 days).

Pivotalweather

Great web site for weather models. The link here will take you to a surface map of the United States, but you can get closer if you change the Zoom on the top, then Regional, then click the blue dot near Las Vegas. You can also make it a loop or change the model with the other blue dropdowns near the top.

Look at other levels of the atmosphere (besides the surface) by changing the parameter on the left. Make sure the Run in the upper left is current! Otherwise you'll be looking at an old forecast.

Tropical Tidbits

This is another good model page. It has most of the major models, except for the Euro. It does have a good tropical weather model section (hence it's name) under Hurricane.

San Jose St. Model Page

Models run by the Department of Meteorology at San Jose State University.

They have good northern California sector views of the HRRR, GFS, & NAM models.

High Resolution Ensemble Forecast (HREF)

Good high resolution short term model, run by the Storm Prediction Center.

North State precipitation forecast

Precipitation (rain & melted snow) forecast for interior northern California for the next 6 days, from the California Nevada River Forecast Center. Change the Location and/or Time Period for more specific data.

LOTS of other good stuff on here, so after you check out the rain forecast, look at the Hydrology, Weather, Climate or other tabs for other information.

Text Models - No graphics, text only

  1. National Blend of Models (NBM). NBS is detailed short range, and NBE is not-as-detailed long range.
  2. MOS Bulletins (GFS, NAM models). NAM is short range, GFS is long range.

You'll need to know the 3 letter airport codes for our area.

RDD= Redding, RBL=Red Bluff, CIC=Chico, OVE=Oroville, MYV=Marysville, SAC=Sacramento, MHS=Mt. Shasta, AAT=Alturas, SFO=San Francisco, RNO=Reno.

National Centers for Environmental Prediction

Models straight from the source: the government.

Model Archive - Surface & Upper Air models

Old NAM (North American Mesoscale) model runs, back to 1999.
