FIRMS fire mapping

This is an interactive fire mapping tool from NASA.

CALIFORNIA ALERTWildfire Cameras

The ALERTWildfire cameras have dedicated a new website JUST for California cameras. VERY useful in discovering and tracking fires. Click here for that.

ALERTWildfire Cameras

A network of cameras in remote places of the west. This site has thinned out the California cameras, but still has plenty in other states across the west.

Satellite image of the fires at night

*Initial image here is 7/28/21. Change the date on the bottom left to see current or historical imagery. Images go back to May 1, 2021.*
Use this to look at nighttime imagery of any fires burning nearby. Turn off the 'Fires and Thermal Anomalies' overlay on the left to see the glow from the fires.

Satellite imagery: side by side comparison

This cleans up the smoke on a satellite a bit, by using false colors. The false colors help the burn scar stand out. I've set it here to look at the Camp Fire. A (left) is a visible image of 11/8/18. B (right) is false color a month later. Select A or B on tab on top left, then select a day on the bottom left to change comparisons.

ONCC - Northern California Geographic Area Coordination Center

LOTS of fire information here. This is where you'll find current Energy Release Components, or ERC. Hit 'Fuels/Fire Danger' on the left, then select your Area from the 'ERC's -- Choose a PSA' (Predictive Service Area) dropdown.
Many other fire analysis tools here.

The Lookout

This is Zeke Lunder's website, and he often has detailed information on nearby fires.

What can be done to reduce future megafires?

Author Daniel Swain describes how the combination of Climate Change and lack of forest management have led to our recent horrible fire seasons, and if anything can be done to fix it.

Can we fix our broken fire seasons?

Talking about how forest mismanagement and Climate Change have come together to create our terrible fire seasons of late.

After the fire: Soil damaged by fire becomes water repellant

Nice article that talks about Hydrophobic Soils: After a fire burns through an area, the burned plant residue coats the soil, and the soil now repels rain. Includes a few tips to mitigate this, if your land has been burned.

Butte County Evacuation Zones

If there's an Evacuation Order or Warning in Butte County for fire, flood, or some other danger to public safety, you'll find it here.

CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone map

Do you live in a Moderate Fire Hazard Safety Zone (FHSZ) area? High Fire Hazard Safety Zone area? Or a Very High Fire Hazard Safety Zone?

This is CALFIRE's interactive map of California's Fire Hazard Safety Zones.

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) High Fire Threat districts

This is an interactive map from the California Public Utilities Commission of their high fire threat districts in California.

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) fire investigations

While CALFIRE or local fire districts determine how wildfires start/spread, the CPUC is investigating certain fires potentially started by PG & E and Southern California Edison for their compliance with applicable rules & regulations.

The North State fires on this list (with reports attached):

Camp, Cherokee, Dixie, Fly, LaPorte, and Zogg fires.
